New York, NY - January 6, 2011 —
On Sunday, January 30th from 1 to 5:00 pm, Centro Primo Levi
in collaboration with RAI and the Consulate General of Italy
will present an afternoon of discussion, film, and testimonies
on Italian Jews from antifascism to Resistance.
The program is held at the Center for Jewish History –
16 West 16th Street, NYC.
Admission is free. Reservations are recommended at memoria@primolevicenter.org.
All conversations and the film will be in English. www.primolevicenter.org
In a rare long distance format, made possible by the collaboration
with RAI, a panel of prominent Italian intellectuals and witnesses
will recount and discuss the little-known story of Italian
Jewish participation in antifascist activities and armed resistance.
A film screening of The Rosselli Case (Italian w/English
subtitles), directed by Stella Savino and produced by Rai,
DocLab, and Fox Channels Italy will follow.
Conversations with guests from different Italian cities will
be illustrated by footage and images from the Italian television
historical archives.
The panel will examine the early opposition to Mussolini's
regime, the Matteotti murder in 1924, and the exodus to France
of many political dissenters.
The central topic of the program will be the movement Giustizia
e Libertà, whose founders, the Rosselli brothers, were
murdered in 1937. The hit was ordered by the Italian secret
police and executed by the French Cagoule, an extremist right-wing
group.
The program will also analyze the role of lesser known groups,
including Delasem - the Italian Jewish relief organization
that provided assistance and international connections to
foreign Jewish refugees and later to Italian Jews, the Committee
of National Liberation of Nothern Italy - a partisan
group that rose against the Germans and created the Republic
of Ossola, the only independent front in Northern Italy before
1945, as well as the Jewish Brigade in Italy.
Participants will be connected via videoconference from several
Italian cities.
Guests include: Liliana Picciotto, Anna Bravo, Alberto Rosselli,
Davide Rodogno, Paolo Bologna, Guri Schwarz, David Bidussa,
Gianfranco Moscati, Miriam Mafai, Michele Battini, Anna Foa
and Emanuele Fiano.
