New
York, NY, USA, November 1, 2010 —
The Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards announces
the American premiere of the original and groundbreaking performance
I am America in New York City November
3-20. Premiering on November 3rd at the Ramscale Penthouse
in a gala event hosted by the acclaimed director, André
Gregory, I am America opens for
a month-long run at St. Johns's Lutheran Church in Greenwich
Village. I am America brings the
poetry of Allen Ginsberg to life in a visceral performance
with language culled from Ginsberg’s opus as well as
calls, shouts and traditional songs from American South. Original
compositions by members of the Workcenter, developed in intensive
collaboration over a period of three years, complement and
build upon these sources.
The
company will also perform the intimate, cabaret-style show
Electric Party Songs at the Bowery
Poetry Club and Nuyorican Poets Café as well as the
full-fledged, proscenium-style, concert spectacle Not
History's Bones - a poetry concert at St. John's
Lutheran Church.
Continuing
its presence on the world stage, the U.S. premiere follows
a tour across Europe from Barcelona to Poland to the far reaches
of Lithuania and Italy. In Europe, the Workcenter was honored
to perform at diverse venues — from historic landmarks
such as the Ducal Palace in Genova to the intimate art-deco
bar Kalambur, a local institution in Wroclaw, Poland. Upcoming
invitations include a residency at Stanford University and
performances at the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco
as well as sojourns in Krakow, Paris, Le Mans and Toronto.
Don't miss this rare opportunity to see the Workcenter in
New York City!
The
Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards was founded
in 1986 in Pontedera, Italy by Jerzy Grotowski, well known
as one of the most influential theatre practitioners of the
20th century for his work, Art as Vehicle, as well
as numerous other lines of inquiry. Today, the Workcenter
continues its research into the very essence of theatre: the
moment of meaningful contact between human beings.
The
Open Program is an area fo research within the Workcenter’s
larger mission and was commenced in 2007 by 11 actors from
Italy, Spain, Poland, France, Argentina, the United States
and Canada, led by the Workcenter’s Associate Director,
Mario Biagini.

QUOTES
| If
you see one Performance this season, see I am America.
It's the finest theatre I have seen in the last 25 years. |

-
André Gregory |
| Joyful
and Liberating... beyond the inauthentic that so often
rules us. |
| |
-
Dramma Italy |
| Incantatory,
inflammatory... Echoes of the dark, mystical spirituality
that still lives in our national unconscious. |
| |
-
Robert Moses |
| I
am America is a poem in music. |
| |
-
Oswaldo Guerrier |
| Superb
voices, trained and orchestrated in an astonishing polyphony. |

| For
the Workcenter's artists the poetic word is a “substance”
to be dramaturgically ... manipulated; it is a means of
crossing over; it is something to be embodied in order
that it can be given in sound and movement, song and dance. |

-
Dramma Italy |
| The
only thing that can save the world is the reclaiming of
the awareness of the world. That's what poetry does ...
the imagining of who we are and the slow realization of
it. |
